Foods with naturally occurring sugars are safe to eat because they usually come with other components in them like fiber that slow down the digestion of sugar in the body- this prevents rapid blood sugar spike and drop that can lead to weight gain and insulin resistance.  Added sugars, on the other hand, include sugars and syrups that are added to the foods during processing to make the final product more appealing in terms of taste. As much as possible, choose healthier cereals with naturally-occurring sugars instead of those with added sugars. It’s important to read the ingredients list on the pack and identify if there is any added sugar to the product. 

    How can I identify healthy cereals?

    When looking for a healthy cereal,  it’s important to read the ingredients list and nutritional information on the pack and look for:

    • Whole grains: Healthy cereals should comprise whole grains like quinoa, oats, brown rice, millet, purple corn flour etc. Whole grains are higher in fiber and more nutritious as compared to refined grains such as white flour, white rice, wheat flour.
    • Low sugar: You can aim for cereals with less than 5 grams of sugar per serving. Check the nutrition table – the sugar content stated here will cover both the naturally occurring sugar and added sugar, if any. Check the ingredients list to identify any added sugars that are not healthy like high fructose corn syrup, glucose, sugar (usually refined cane sugar). 
    • Packed with nutrients: Look for cereals that are packed with essential vitamins and minerals like iron, B vitamins, and essential amino acids that are naturally occurring for example in whole grains like quinoa, millet, amaranth, oats. 
    • High fiber content: It’s best to choose cereals that contain at least 4 grams of dietary fiber per serving as it will help to promote good digestion.
