Are there any adverse or side effects to taking Maca Root Powder?
Maca has no known contraindications or toxicity. It is well tolerated by most people with proper use and at the right dosage. As Maca is an adaptogen, it responds differently to each person by regulating the body to achieve hormonal balance. Maca is not in any way similar to a pharmaceutical drug or medicine which often does have side effects. Maca is simply a nutrient-dense whole food that has been consumed for thousands of years in the Andean highlands of Peru.
Having said the above, excessive intake of organic maca root powder may lead to worsened sleep quality, digestive issues, increased heart rate or mild headaches for some people. If you experience these symptoms, the solution is simple – reduce your dosage. Start with just ⅓ teaspoon of maca a day for the first few days, observe your body’s response, and gradually increase to ½ or 1 teaspoon after your body has gotten used to the herb without side effects. Maca is best consumed in the daytime as taking it in the nighttime may affect your sleep quality. Those with a sensitive digestive system may not tolerate raw maca root powder that well, and should consider taking the activated maca root powder (also called gelatinized or pre-cooked) which allows for easier digestion and faster absorption in the body.
